A suspected leader of a cult, Olamide Oloruntobi, has been shot dead by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command during a gun battle.

The 31-year-old, who allegedly terrorised residents of Cele Nizer, in the Ishashi area of Lagos State, was shot dead around 8.40pm on Tuesday.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, said the command had been alerted that members of the Aiye cult were terrorising the area.

He explained that the hoodlums, upon sighting the operatives, opened fire on them.

Oti said, “The late notorious cult member, who was the leader of the dreaded Aiye Confraternity, met his Waterloo on Durosooto Street, Cele Nizer, New Mebamu, Ishashi, around 8.40pm on Tuesday when the police were alerted that the group, led by the deceased, had started terrorising residents.

“Based on the information, the Divisional Police Officer, Ishashi division, SP Amuda Abolaji, led a team of policemen to the scene. On arrival, the hoodlums sighted the police team and opened fire on them. This led to an exchange of gunfire. When the dust settled, Olamide Oloruntobi was found dead. Meanwhile, his locally-made pistol with live ammunition has been recovered. The corpse was deposited in the Badagry General Hospital mortuary for autopsy.”

The police spokesperson said the state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, advised parents to warn their children to renounce cultism.

He said efforts were ongoing to arrest fleeing members of the gang.
